The Oklahoma State Cowboy baseball team just missed Big 12 playoffs by one win. The team needed to sweep the Texas Tech series but lost the first game 9-8 with ace Andrew Oliver at the mound for the Cowboys. Oliver’s second inning undid him as he and the Cowboy defense allowed seven runs to the Cowboy’s two runs. The Cowboys rallied and made the score tied 8-8 in the eighth but Willie Rueda’s single and a fielder’s choice and errors were enough to advance him home for the winning run.

The Cowboys the second game 14-5 with Tyler Lyons pitching. The Cowboys scored for six consecutive innings (2-7) and never stopped their offensive machine. Tom Bleza led the way with 6 at bats, 5 hits, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs.
The third game saw another Cowboy victory, 10-9. Freshman Tyler Blandford was throwing the ball for the Cowboys in the squeaker. The Cowboys had a 4-2 lead into the third inning and the Red Raiders battled back to make the score 9-4 in their favor in the stretch. But the Cowboys awoke and scored 6 in the seventh and took charge defensively to close the game 10-9.

It was not enough and the Cowboys will most likely have finished the season with a 32-22 overall record, and a 9-16 Big 12 record, not enough to make the Big 12 and most likely not enough to make the NCAA tournament.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirl softball team lost two games this past weekend to the Missouri Lady Tiger team in an attempt to improve from their 4-4 Big 12 record. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls would have to go through the top ranked Big 12 team, Missouri.

Oklahoma State was in trouble early in the first game. Cowgirl pitcher Anna Whiddon struck out her first batter, Rhea Taylor. Cowgirl second baseman Alysia Hamilton’s error placed Andee Allan on first. The next Lady Tiger batter, Marla Schweisberger, homered sending her and Allan home to score.

The Cowgirls answered the Lady Tiger call. Mariah Gearhart batted leadoff for the Cowgirls and she singled by a bunt. Katelyn Bright doubled to have runners on first and third. Alysia Hamilton was walked to fill the first base hole. Sam Heinlein struck out to make the first out. Megan Castle hit a single that sent Gearhart home and put the Cowgirls on the board. Julie Ward hit into a fielder’s choice that yield no results for the Cowgirls. Lady Tiger pitcher Stacy Delaney stuck out the next Cowgirl batter to end the inning with Missouri on top, 2-1. Three Cowgirls were left on base.

Missouri continued to play the power game in the second. After Gina Schneider reached first by a single, Lindsey Ubrun hit one over the fence for the only two scores for the Missouri Lady Tigers in the second. The Cowgirls again answered the Lady Tigers, but not in a power fashion. Chelsea Garcia, Kelsey Anchors and Gearhart loaded the bases. Bright’s hit resulted in a double play taking out Garcia and left first base empty. With runners on second and third, Hamilton singled and the Lady Tiger’s catcher, Megan Christopher, error let Anchors and Gearhart score. Pitcher Delaney ended the inning with a strikeout and left the Lady Tigers on top by one, 4-3.

Whiddon and Delaney took charge in third and fourth innings. No player was allowed past first. In the fifth Whiddon was replaced by Sara Odom after she allowed Schweisberger to double. The Lady Tigers would go on to score one run in the fifth when Odom walked Ubrun with the bases loaded and Schweisberger scored the last run of the game. The Cowgirls were shut out in the fifth and the rest of the game. At the end of the seventh inning the scoreboard read 5-3, Lady Tigers.

The next game did not go as well as the first game for the Cowgirls. Missouri started the game off with Taylor and Schweisberger scoring. The Lady Tigers had only one hit, but he Cowgirls committed two errors and pitcher Anna Whiddon walked two Lady Tigers. The Cowgirl offense was making good contact with the ball, but Kristin Nottelman of the Lady Tiger pitching staff and the Lady Tiger defense only allowed Bright to double. The inning ended with the Lady Tigers leading 2-0.

The second and third innings saw one Lady Tiger hit and two Cowgirl hits, but no runs for either team. Odom took over pitching in the fourth for the Cowgirls. Megan Christopher and Abby Vock were allowed on the base paths by a walk and hit by pitch respectively. The two runners advanced when Taylor grounded out to first. Schneider then doubled sending the two Lady Tigers home. Odom allowed no more hits in the inning and the Cowgirls were up to bat. Nottelman stubbornly got he Cowgirls to pop fly or foul out in the forth, giving Missouri a strong lead of 4-0.

In the fifth the Lady Tigers were stiffed by Odom’s pitching and the Cowgirl offense made solid contact on Nottelman. Anchors doubled with one out and Gearhart singled sending Anchors home. But Nottelman and the Lady Tiger defense regained control and allowed no more hits in the inning. Missouri was sitting with a comfortable 4-1 lead going to bat in the sixth.

Both team traded outs in the sixth sending the game to the final inning. The Lady Tigers added two runs after the Cowgirl’s new pitcher, Alex Villalobos, walked Jaydee Young and Christopher sent her home with a home run over the left field wall. The Cowgirls had no more offensive production left in the seventh as Nottelman pitched in the inning and the entire game. The Cowgirls errors and mistakes made the final score 6-1 in favor of the No. 11 Missouri Tigers. The Cowgirls will look to improve on their 4-6 Big 12 record when they face the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman on April 15.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirl softball team lost two games to the Baylor Lady Bears softball team on April 4th and 5th. The games dropped the Cowgirl record to 27-11 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12.

The first game between the Cowgirls and Lady Bears was a stale mate for the first seven innings. The hits came in the first, fourth and sixth by Kayce Walker (Baylor), Julie Ward (OSU) and Katelyn Bright (OSU) respectively. The game was tied at zero going into the eighth, where both teams managed to squeeze out a run.

Whitney Canion, the Lady Bears’ pitcher, pitched eight innings allowing only a single Cowgirl run. Cowgirl center fielder Kelsey Anchors hit a single just out of reach of both the first base and right fielder. Mariah Gearhart hit into a fielder’s choice taking out Anchors at second. Gearhart stole second and scored after a Bright single.

Oklahoma State switched pitchers in the middle of the fourth, Anna Whiddon for Sarah Odom. Odom had allowed only one hit until the eighth. Megan Turk singled, Courtney Oberg walked, and both girls advanced one base off errors and stolen bases. Megan Weldon reached first on an error and allowed Turk to score. The Cowgirls gave up no more runs for the inning leaving the score tied at one each.

In the ninth Canion and the Lady Bear defense kept the Cowgirls from coming anywhere close to scoring. The Cowgirl defense, however, could not stop the Lady Bear offense. With two outs and extra innings in sight, the Lady Bears had Kayce Walker on third when Alex Colyer homered to end the game and make the score 3-2 in favor of the Lady Bears.

The next game did not go the Cowgirl’s way even though it was just as close. Whitney Canion, again pitching for the Lady Bears, only permitted three Cowgirl hits and no Cowgirl runs. Anna Whiddon pitched for the Cowgirls and she gave up four Lady Bear hits and two runs. Courtney Oberg scored in the second for the Lady Bears and in the third Bree Hanafin homered to put the Lady Bears up 2-0.

Both teams struggled the remaining innings of the game to get more than on player on base and in scoring position. The game was solid defensively with no errors. With the 2-0 lost to the Lady Bears, the Cowgirls are 3-3 in conference seeking a better position with games in Stillwater vs. Missouri April 10 and 11.

The Oklahoma State Cowboy baseball team swept a double header with the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, March 29. The warm weather was a welcome change for the residents of Stillwater and the Oklahoma State ball club. The previous two games with the Tigers were postponed due to wet weather.

Andrew Oliver, the Cowboy’s ace, started the game for Oklahoma State while Kyle Gibson took the mound for Mizzou. Oliver yield to only one run, by Ryan Lollis, in the first inning. The Tigers were not as fortunate when the Cowboys came up to bat. Tyrone Hambly started the hit fest for the Cowboys. Batting in the second spot, Hambly hit a single. The hit was quickly followed by Neil Medchill’s single. Both men were driven in when “Mean” Dean Green hit a homer over the right field wall. The Tigers closed the inning after Green’s homer with two defensive outs.

Oliver went to work on the Tiger offense in the second inning. Oliver glided, powered and willed his pitches past three Tiger hitters, striking all three out. The Cowboy offense took Oliver’s energy to the plate. Doug Kroll, Davis Duren, Mark Ginther, and Michael Dabbs all scored with the help of skipper Frank Anderson. The Cowboy’s closed the second inning with strong momentum offensively and defensively.

Trevor Coleman of the Tigers made contact against Oliver’s change up in the third, the only hit of the third. The Tigers put pitcher Scooter Hicks on the mound in the same inning and he threw ground balls and the Tiger defense stood the test. After Oliver and the Cowboy defense knocked out their three outs, Dabbs came up to bat for the Cowboys. His home run put the Cowboys up 8-0.

The fifth saw no hits from the Tigers. The Cowboys faced the third Tiger pitcher, Andrew Mueller, and took him for five runs. Coach Anderson helped the Cowboys glide into the sixth inning with a 13-0 lead. In the sixth Oliver allowed Lollis to single, who was driven in by catcher Trevor Coleman’s double. The Cowboys allowed no more runs for the rest of the game.

Unfortunately they also didn’t score any more points. A scoreless seventh left the score at 13-1 in favor of the Cowboys, which meant that the run rule was in effect and the game was called.

The Cowboys and Tigers faced off again later Sunday afternoon. The first inning started much like the first inning of the first game. Tyler Blandford pitched for the Cowboys. He struck no one out, but let the Oklahoma State defense get the three outs to end the inning.

Nick Tepesch of Mizzou was in charge of cooling a hot Cowboy offense with his pitches. Like the first inning of the first game, Tyrone Hambly, batting second, started off the Cowboy offense. He doubled between outs and “Mean” Dean Green singled giving Hambly the run and himself the RBI. Tepesch regained control and struck out Kevin David to end the inning.

The second inning started off with Blandford walking Steve Gray, but Blandford and the Cowboy’s defensive efforts the rest of the inning did not allow the Tigers to capitalize. The Tigers then returned the favor by not allowing any Cowboy on base with solid defensive throws and catches.

Defense ruled the third inning. Routine catches and throws made it impossible for either team to make any significant offensive plays. In the fourth inning the Tiger and Cowboy defense broke down due to mistakes and strategy. Blandford walked Greg Flogia who was driven home with a Steve Gray triple. Gray advanced home when Blandford balked. Trevor Coleman advanced with four balls and Blandford had to clean up his mess. The Cowboy defense got the two needed outs and Mizzou left the top of the fourth up 2-1.

The Cowboys answered the Tigers by advancing Green to third with a Kevin David sacrifice bunt. Tom Belza advanced Green home to tie the game at 2 apiece. The inning ended with the Tiger defense quietly stopping the Cowboys.

The Tigers did not get on base in the fifth and the Cowboy’s lone score was off leadoff hitter Michael Dabbs home run, his second of the day. In the sixth, Mizzou could still not reach home and Oklahoma State used three Cowboys to send Kevin David home. The Tigers still failed to produce in the seventh but the Cowboys continued to sink their teeth into a lead. With Hambly on base, Neil Medchill homered to send the only two runs of the seventh home.

Oklahoma State entered the eighth inning up 6-2. Phil McCormick replaced Blandford early in the seventh and held the Tigers uncomfortably at bay. Randy McCurry replaced Tepesch early in the seventh. He held back the Cowboys not counting the Medchill home run. With both teams in a stalemate in the eighth, Oklahoma State and Missouri had one final inning to play. If the Tigers could overcome the four run defect then the whole inning would be played, but the Cowboy defense and McCormick’s pitching did not let one Tiger find a base.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys successfully beat the Missouri Tigers in two games in the double header. The teams will face off again Monday, March 30 at 1 pm.
