Good afternoon, Oklahoma City, and welcome to our first “What’s Happening this Week” feature! We’ve designed “What’s Happening” to keep you in the loop every Monday afternoon with details on all the events in the metro worth checking out. You’ll also want to check out the (much cooler) weekend feature debuting this Friday afternoon. Enough talk — on to the goodies!

Monday, April 27th

Twinprov Performance @ “Mondays Don’t Suck”
Time: 8:30pm – 10:30pm
Location: 51st Street Speakeasy

The 51st Speakeasy is hosting “Twinprov”, an original two-man show with twin brothers Buck and Clint Vrazel that’s promised to be a mix of improv, stand-up, sketch, and musical comedy. There’s no cover to get in, and rumor has it they’ll only card you if you want to drink. It’s a smoke-free environment, to boot!

Tuesday, April 28th

Rally ’round the Flaming Lips!
Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Location: Oklahoma History Center

You have probably heard the hubbub over Oklahoma’s “Official Rock Song” by now. The Flaming Lips are our local rock stars, but because they occasionally wear silly shirts and curse our mom doesn’t let us hang with them. In this case, by “mom” I mean “Oklahoma House of Representatives.”

On Tuesday Governor Henry will sign the song into the annals of Oklahoma history using his super governor powers. There will be a rally to yell things, and Mg will be there. If anything, it’s a great excuse to cut out of work early.

Wednesday, April 29th

The Last Wednesdays
Time: 6:30pm – 10:00pm

Artists, designers, and random people are invited to the last Wednesday of the month mixer at the ODDFAB, Oklahoma’s #1 place were people do things, and stuff. Bring your own drinks! Start a revolution!

Friday, May 1st

Overture Happy Hour
Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm
Rumor has it they’ll be on the patio, and will be imbibing a number of delicious drinks in honor of everything Friday. Jazz harping to follow happy hour, so why not stay for dinner?

That’s all the talk that worth talking this week. If you would like to make sure we include your happy-good fun time next week, make sure you invite us to the event on Facebook. You are using Facebook, right? We’ll see you around town!

I’ve been to San Franciso a number of times, for a number of things. I’ve walked through The Castro, and although my job is sometimes to take pictures, my digital camera has no need for film. I’ve sat in the Moscone Center, but I generally neglect to mention it because I’m afraid I’ll pronounce it wrong. I like to consider myself of above average intellect, but in retrospect I think it’s safe to say that I know very little.

The next time I make it to Telegraph Hill, I plan on pausing to take it all in.

The film Milk is the story of Harvey Milk (played by Sean Penn), an openly gay man that made history by becoming the first gay man to become an elected official in the state of California, and made history shortly thereafter by being brutally murdered by a colleague. The story is based on facts, so much so that it could even be classified as a historical film. During my research for this piece, it became apparent that the producers of the film want to tell Harvey Milk’s story as honestly as possible.

I’ve hesitate to pen my thoughts on this film, as the gay rights movement in the great state of Oklahoma is obviously a point of contention. Let me be completely honest: when I first thought about putting down these words, I wanted to open with “My name is Lorien Faulkner, and I’m here to recruit you.” I later decided that would do Mr. Milk’s legacy a discredit, and I wouldn’t be caught dead doing something silly like that.

I am not gay. That said, I’m also no bigot.

I’m also no preacher, so I’ll leave the rest of the thoughts wanting to pound themselves onto the keyboard in my head. If you ever want to have a lengthy conversation about my thoughts on the state of humanity, feel free to pull me aside sometime and ask me what I thought about Milk. It might make for an interesting conversation, or it might start a fight. It’ll be your call, either way.

The collective memory of our country is far too short. If you get a chance, I would like to urge you to watch Milk. If you’re worried about what your family or friends might think, feel free to NetFlix it in the privacy of your home. The film is not obscene, and more importantly it tells a story that needs to be heard right now, this very minute. I’ll leave you with words that I think are as weighty as Dr. King’s “I have a dream.”

“My name is Harvey Milk, and I’m here to recruit you.”

As some of you may know, I’ve been a videogame critic for a few years now. Videogames and film are definitely two different beasts, but they do share one thing in common: producers of both love World War II. So much so that I hear complaints every year about “another WW2 shooter” that’s on it’s way to store shelves. The same can be said for Hollywood, who seem to have an affinity for the era as well.

Mind you, I’m grateful for the fact that both my grandfathers put their lives on the line for freedom. I’m even more thankful for the sacrifice of those families that lost loved ones for the call of duty. That said, I wasn’t excited about watching another (probably depressing) film based on that great war.

Conveniently for myself and you, Defiance is not just another rehash of the bullets and blood. I would even venture to say that the film is unlike any other made before it, and that’s a good thing. Never mind the fact that I think the starring character (a one Mr. Daniel Craig) is the hottest thing since nuclear power. And yes, I’m allowed to say that as I’ve been happily married to my gorgeous wife for ten years. I may love him more than she does, at least in a tuxedo.

Defiance is the story of a group of Jewish brothers that have fled certain death at the hands of the Germans, only to immediately find themselves the sometimes unwilling leaders of a large group of similar refugees. The story is less about Nazis (although they are avoided at all cost, for certain) and more about the impromptu community formed by a group of men, women, and children struggling for survival. I enjoyed the film greatly, and if you are a fan of war movies you should enjoy the fresh perspective on a tired genre.

If you aren’t a fan of war movies, go see Defiance anyway for the sometimes half-naked Daniel Craig. He’s so dreamy!

Fox Searchlight announced this week the acquisition of the Sundance Film Festival opener, Adam. The unique romance showcases the skills of a newly discovered director, Max Mayer. Adam tells the story of two neighbors who share an unexpected love, despite their many differences. Beth is a beautiful and intelligent writer, Adam is her perplexing neighbor who is handsome, but strange.

PARK CITY, UT January 20, 2009 – Fox Searchlight Pictures President Peter Rice today announced that the company has acquired worldwide rights to the one-of-a-kind romance ADAM. Written and directed by Max Mayer, ADAM stars Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving and Frankie Faison. The film is produced by Leslie Urdang, Miranda De Pencier and Dean Vanech. Executive produced by Dan Revers, Christina Weiss Lurie and co-produced by Gary Guidice, Geoff Linville. The film is scheduled to be released in 2009.

Said Fox Searchlight Pictures President Peter Rice, “ADAM has deeply satisfying and romantic storytelling, pitch perfect performances and the discovery of a new American filmmaker; this is what Sundance is all about.”

Producer Leslie Urdang stated, “Watching the film with an audience for the first time, hearing so much laughter, seeing all those tears– and then walking out of the theatre and selling it to Fox Searchlight… it is the best possible Sundance experience.”

Producer Miranda de Pencier stated, “When you are making a movie, you are always in a bubble and you never know what the outcome is going to be; so, to be able to share the film with such an enthusiastic Sundance audience, and now the impassioned Fox Searchlight, is an utter thrill.”

Said Writer/Director Max Mayer, “Before today, I’d seen ADAM a few times in groups of 6 or 8 friends. Hearing an audience of 1400 strangers take the movie into their collective hearts this afternoon was overwhelming, humbling and incredibly gratifying.”

The boy and the girl in ADAM are no ordinary characters, and their romance is anything but familiar. Soon after moving in, Beth, a brainy, beautiful writer damaged from a past relationship encounters Adam, the handsome, but odd, fellow in the downstairs apartment whose awkwardness is perplexing. Beth and Adam’s ultimate connection leads to a tricky relationship that exemplifies something universal: truly reaching another person means bravely stretching into uncomfortable territory and the resulting shake-up can be liberating.

The deal was brokered on Fox Searchlight’s side by Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions Tony Safford, Vice President of Acquisitions Ray Strache and Vice President of Business Affairs Megan O’Brien with Andrew Herwitz, President of The Film Sales Company on behalf of the filmmakers.

Fox Searchlight Pictures is a specialty film company that both produces and acquires motion pictures. It has its own marketing and distribution operations, and its films are distributed internationally by Twentieth Century Fox. Fox Searchlight Pictures is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a unit of Fox Entertainment Group.

We’re half-way through the work week people, and I’ve got a couple flicks for your to catch tonight. As it’s Wednesday night the choice is not stellar, but we’ve got a few to get you through to Thursday. Here’s the list of films showing tonight that we suggest you catch:

Constantine on AMC (COX channel 33) at 7:00PM
Based on comic book Hellblazer, Constantine tells the story of a supernatural detective John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), who has literally been to hell and back. Fans of Reeves that haven’t seen this might plug in, as well as fans of the comic.

The Family Man on ABC Family (COX channel 36) at 7:00PM
After falling through to an alternate dimension, a single fast-track lawyer (Nicolas Cage) find himself in a new life with a family and kids. Morals are learned, etc. If you’re shooting for a romantic drama, have at it. We’re gonna watch Constantine instead.

Garfield on The Cartoon Network (COX channel 52) at 7:00PM
Everyone’s favorite Sunday comic, Garfield hits the big screen in this live action film. Fur will fly, we’re sure. If you’re looking for a good flick to catch with the kids, this one’s a sure-fire winner.

We’ll catch you tomorrow!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. day, fellow readers. Those of you that work in the schools and various government bodies have the day off, while the rest of us have to slub off to work. Either way, your trusty editors at PTD Magazine are here to remind you of all the great movies that will be running tonight.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, BET (COX channel 50) will be running the 2001 made for TV movie, The Boycott. The Boycott is a film documenting the protest that Dr. King leads after Rosa Parks refuses to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama. I’ve not seen the film, and look forward to HBO’s take on the subject. The film will be shown at 7:00PM and 11:00PM tonight.

Here’s the list of films showing tonight that we suggest you catch:

The Queen on Bravo (COX channel 67) at 7:00PM
Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Tony Blair try to reach a compromise in determining the royal family’s public reaction to Princess Diana’s death. This Oscar winner is a treat for fans of the British, or anyone who remembers where they were on the day Diana died.

The Fantastic Four on FX (COX channel 35) at 7:00PM
Four people gain unusual powers after a space mission exposes them to cosmic radiation. Based on the comic book. It’s our reviewers humble opinion that this film is not worth paying money to see. If you are going to watch it, it might as well be on cable.

Dances with Wolves on CMTV (COX channel 39) at 8:00PM
Kevin Costner’s epic vision of the American frontier as seen through the eyes of a 19th-century U.S. Cavalry officer. If you’ve not seen this film yet, fire up the TiVo.

The Hills Have Eyes on SpikeTV (COX channel 45) at 8:00PM
A family road trip takes a terrifying turn when the travelers become stranded in a government atomic zone inhabited by a band of bloodthirsty mutants. I’ve not had a chance to catch this one yet, but if radioactive mutants are wrong, I don’t want to be right.

I’ve got good news and bad news, and I think we owe it to our readers to cover the bad news first. The bad news, as it has become apparent in these last weeks, is that the world is close to it’s final days. We’re here to present our finding that The Day the Earth Stood Still is indeed November 11th, 2008. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that we’ve got free passes to the event, which will be oddly transmitted to a theater in Oklahoma City. If you would like to join us for the screening of The Day the Earth Stood Still, head on over to All Star Comics at 6900 N May Ave # 10A, Oklahoma City to get your free passes.

The screening is for November 11th at 7:30 at the AMC 24 in the Quail Spring Mall. All Star Comics has one hundred passes, and each one will admit 2 people to the show. Please remember to get your passes as soon as possible and be at the theater as early as you can. The show will be full, and the passes don’t guarentee you a seat, so be early.

You can pick you passes up seven days a week, up until the day of the show. All Star Comics is open 12-6 on weekdays, 11-6 on Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday. In our final hours on this planet, the staff of PTD Magazine and All Star Comics hope you’ll enjoy this last movie of the 21st Century.
